Part of being in a Greek organization involves philanthropy. Sigma Chi participates in many philanthropic events hosted by both sororities and fraternities on campus. In addition, Sigma Chi brothers perform their own philanthropies, and Sigma Chi also hosts its own philanthropic week-long event, Derby Days.

At the 1992 Leadership Training Workshop, Significant Sig and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Merlin Olsen (Utah State, 1962), introduced the Children's Miracle Network (CMN) as Sigma Chi's suggested beneficiary of proceeds from chapter community service projects. The CMN, an alliance of 165 hospitals and health care facilities across the United States and Canada, generates funds for the children its associated hospitals serve. Network hospitals treat all types of illnesses and afflictions, regardless of the family's ability to pay. All financial contributions go directly to the hospital nearest the donor.

Seventy percent of the Fraternity's active chapters and many of its alumni chapters are located in the same city as, or within an hour's drive of, one or more CMN hospitals. All are within 200 miles, giving members the opportunity to support CMN by raising funds, visiting patients, or assisting with local educational and promotional programs.

Since 1992, Sigma Chi chapters have raised over 3 million dollars to benefit the Children's Miracle Network and devoted thousands of hours to local CMN affiliates. In 2002, Sigma Chi undergraduate and alumni chapters raised $585,000 for their area CMN hospitals.

The Ohio State chapter of Sigma Chi hosts Derby Days, a week long event every spring in which all proceeds benefit the Children's Miracle Network. The events hosted by Sigma Chi involve most of the sororities on campus, who compete against each other for points. This year events included "powder-puff" flag football, concerts, barbeques at the fraternity house, a scavenger hunt, and a volleyball tournament.
